마가복음 5:1-20

1 예수님과 제자들이 호수 건너편 거라사 지방으로 갔습니다.
2 예수님께서 배에서 내리시자, 더러운 귀신이 들린 어떤 사람이 무덤에서 나와 예수님을 만났습니다.
3 이 사람은 무덤 사이에서 살고 있었는데, 그 누구도 그를 묶을 수 없었고, 쇠사슬로도 묶을 수 없었습니다.
4 여러 번 쇠고랑과 쇠사슬로 그를 묶어 보았으나 그는 쇠사슬도 끊고, 쇠고랑도 부수었습니다. 아무도 그를 당해 낼 수 없었습니다.
5 그는 밤낮으로 무덤과 산을 돌아다니며, 소리를 지르고 돌로 자기 몸에 상처를 내곤 하였습니다.
6 귀신들린 자가 멀리서 예수님을 보고, 달려와 엎드려 절을 하였습니다.
7 그리고 큰 소리로 “가장 높으신 하나님의 아들이신 예수님, 저와 무슨 상관이 있으십니까? 제발 저를 괴롭히지 마십시오” 하고 외쳤습니다.
8 그것은 예수님께서 “더러운 귀신아! 그 사람에게서 나오너라” 하고 그에게 말씀하셨기 때문이었습니다.
9 예수님께서 그에게 물으셨습니다. “네 이름이 무엇이냐?” 그가 대답했습니다. “레기온 입니다. 이는 우리의 수가 많기 때문에 붙여진 이름입니다.”
10 그는 예수님께 자신들을 또다시 이 지방에서 쫓아 내지 말아 달라고 간청하였습니다.
11 마침 그 곳 산허리에서 많은 돼지 떼가 먹이를 먹고 있었습니다.
12 더러운 귀신들이 간청했습니다. “우리를 저 돼지들에게 보내셔서 들어가게 해 주십시오.”
13 예수님께서 그렇게 허락하셨습니다. 더러운 귀신들은 그 사람에게서 나와 돼지 떼 속으로 들어갔습니다. 그러자 거의 이천 마리나 되는 돼지 떼가 호수쪽으로 산비탈을 내리달아 빠져 죽었습니다.
14 돼지를 치던 사람들이 달아나서, 읍내와 촌에 있는 사람들에게 이 사실을 알렸습니다. 그래서 사람들이 무슨 일이 일어났는지 보려고 왔습니다.
15 그들은 예수님께 와서, 귀신이 들렸던 사람, 곧 레기온 귀신이 들렸던 사람이 옷을 입고 제정신으로 돌아와 앉아 있는 모습을 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다.
16 이 일을 목격했던 사람들이 그들에게 귀신들린 사람에게 어떤 일이 일어났는지에 대하여, 그리고 돼지 떼에 대하여 그들에게 말해 주었습니다.
17 그러자 그들은 예수님께 자기네 지방을 떠나 달라고 요구하기 시작했습니다.
18 예수님께서 배에 앉으시자, 귀신들렸던 사람도 예수님을 따라가게 해 달라고 간청하였습니다.
19 그러나 예수님께서는 허락하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님께서 “네 가족 식구들과 친구들에게로 가거라. 그들에게 주님께서 네게 얼마나 큰 일을 해 주셨으며, 얼마나 큰 자비를 베풀어 주셨는지 이야기하여라” 하고 말씀하셨습니다.
20 그래서 그 사람은 돌아갔습니다. 그리고 데가볼리 지역에서 예수님께서 자기에게 얼마나 큰 일을 해 주셨는지를 사람들에게 이야기하자, 모든 사람들이 듣고 놀랐습니다.

2 When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil① spirit came out from a cemetery to meet him. / ①Greek unclean; also in 5.8, 13
3 This man lived among the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain.
4 Whenever he was put into chains and shackles-as he often was-he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5 Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.
6 When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him.
7 With a shriek, he screamed, "Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don't torture me!"
8 For Jesus had already said to the spirit, "Come out of the man, you evil spirit."
9 Then Jesus demanded, "What is your name?" And he replied, "My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man."
10 Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place.
11 There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby.
12 "Send us into those pigs," the spirits begged. "Let us enter them."
13 So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.
14 The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened.
15 A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.
16 Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs.
17 And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone.
18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him.
19 But Jesus said, "No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been."
20 So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns① of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them. / ①Greek Decapolis
