성경말씀: 사도행전 22:22-30

22:22 ○ 그 자리에 모인 유대인들은 바울의 말을 여기까지 듣고는, 일제히 소리를 질러 댔다. “이런 자를 그냥 살려두어선 안 된다! 그는 죽어야 마땅하다!” 23 그들은 미친 듯이 고함을 질러 대면서, 옷을 벗어 던지고 흙을 움켜쥐고서 공중에 던졌다. 24 그러자 천부장은 바울을 병영 안으로 빨리 데리고 들어가라고 부하들에게 명령했다. 그리고 그를 채찍으로 심문하여, 사람들이 왜 이렇게 소동을 벌이는지 그 이유를 밝혀내라고 지시했다. 25 그래서 군인들이 채찍으로 치려고 바울을 결박하려 하자, 바울이 곁에 서 있는 백부장에게 말했다. “보십시오. 로마 시민을 재판도 하지 않은 채 매질을 가하는 법이 어디에 있소?” 26 이 말을 듣고, 백부장이 얼른 천부장에게 달려가서 보고했다. “천부장님, 어떻게 해야 할까요? 저 사람이 로마 시민이랍니다.” 27 그러자 천부장이 놀라워하며 바울에게 와서 물었다. “그대가 정말 로마 시민이오?” 바울이 대답했다. “그렇습니다.” 28 천부장이 말했다. “나도 로마 시민권을 가지고 있는데, 돈이 꽤 많이 들었소.” 바울이 대답했다. “저는 태어날 때부터 로마 시민입니다.” 29 이 말을 듣고, 바울을 심문하려고 했던 군인들이 즉시 물러갔다. 천부장 또한 바울이 로마 시민이라는 사실을 알고는, 그를 결박한 일 때문에 덜컥 겁이 났다. 30 이튿날, 천부장은 바울이 왜 유대인들에게 고발을 당했는지 그 이유를 직접 알아보려 했다. 그래서 그는 바울을 묶었던 사슬을 풀어 주게 한 뒤, 유대인 대제사장들과 온 공회 의원들을 모이게 했다. 그런 다음, 천부장은 바울을 데리고 나가서, 그들 앞에 세웠다.”(쉬운말 성경)

22 The crowd listened until Paul said that word. Then they all began to shout, “Away with such a fellow! He isn’t fit to live!” 23 They yelled, threw off their coats, and tossed handfuls of dust into the air.

24 The commander brought Paul inside and ordered him lashed with whips to make him confess his crime. He wanted to find out why the crowd had become so furious. 25 When they tied Paul down to lash him, Paul said to the officer[d] standing there, “Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been tried?”

26 When the officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked, “What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen!”

27 So the commander went over and asked Paul, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes, I certainly am,” Paul replied.

28 “I am, too,” the commander muttered, “and it cost me plenty!”

Paul answered, “But I am a citizen by birth!”

29 The soldiers who were about to interrogate Paul quickly withdrew when they heard he was a Roman citizen, and the commander was frightened because he had ordered him bound and whipped.

 

30 The next day the commander ordered the leading priests into session with the Jewish high council.[e] He wanted to find out what the trouble was all about, so he released Paul to have him stand before them.(NEW LIVING TRANSLATION)

1“Brothers and esteemed fathers,” Paul said, “listen to me as I offer my defense.” 2 When they heard him speaking in their own language,[a] the silence was even greater.3 Then Paul said, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, and I was brought up and educated here in Jerusalem under Gamaliel. As his student, I was carefully trained in our Jewish laws and customs. I became very zealous to honor God in everything I did, just like all of you today. 4 And I persecuted the followers of the Way, hounding some to death, arresting both men and women and throwing them in prison. 5 The high priest and the whole council of elders can testify that this is so. For I received letters from them to our Jewish brothers in Damascus, authorizing me to bring the followers of the Way from there to Jerusalem, in chains, to be punished.6 “As I was on the road, approaching Damascus about noon, a very bright light from heaven suddenly shone down around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’8 “‘Who are you, lord?’ I asked.“And the voice replied, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene,[b] the one you are persecuting.’ 9 The people with me saw the light but didn’t understand the voice speaking to me.10 “I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’“And the Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything you are to do.’11 “I was blinded by the intense light and had to be led by the hand to Damascus by my companions. 12 A man named Ananias lived there. He was a godly man, deeply devoted to the law, and well regarded by all the Jews of Damascus. 13 He came and stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, regain your sight.’ And that very moment I could see him!14 “Then he told me, ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and hear him speak. 15 For you are to be his witness, telling everyone what you have seen and heard. 16 What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.’17 “After I returned to Jerusalem, I was praying in the Temple and fell into a trance. 18 I saw a vision of Jesus[c] saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem, for the people here won’t accept your testimony about me.’

19 “‘But Lord,’ I argued, ‘they certainly know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you. 20 And I was in complete agreement when your witness Stephen was killed. I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned him.’21 “But the Lord said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles!’” (New Living Translation)

21:27 ○ 정해진 이레가 거의 다 끝나갈 무렵, 아시아에서 온 몇몇 유대인들이 성전에서 바울을 보고는, 군중을 선동해서 그를 붙잡은 뒤 소리쳤다. 28 “이스라엘 동포 여러분, 이 사람은 사방을 돌아다니면서 우리 민족과 우리 율법, 그리고 거룩한 성전을 거역하는 가르침을 퍼뜨리고 다닙니다. 더구나 이 사람은 헬라인들을 성전에 데리고 와서, 거룩한 이곳을 더럽히기까지 했습니다.” 29 그들은 바울이 예전에 에베소 사람인 드로비모와 같이 있는 것을 보았기 때문에, 이번에도 바울이 으레 그를 성전으로 데리고 온 줄로 알았던 것이다. 30 그리하여 온 도시가 시끄러워졌다. 사람들이 사방에서 몰려들어, 바울을 붙잡아 성전에서 끌고 나갔다. 그러자 성전 문이 곧 닫혔다. 31 그들이 바울을 죽이려고 소동을 벌이는 동안, 예루살렘에 폭동이 일어났다는 소식을 로마군대의 천부장이 듣게 되었다. 32 천부장은 즉시 수하의 백부장과 군인들을 인솔하여 군중들에게로 달려왔다. 로마 군인들이 오는 것을 보자, 폭도들은 바울을 때리는 것을 멈추었다. 33 천부장은 바울을 체포하도록 명령한 뒤, 부하들에게 두 개의 쇠사슬로 그를 결박하게 했다. 그런 다음, 천부장은 군중을 향해 바울이 어떤 사람이며, 무슨 잘못을 저질렀냐고 물었다. 34 그러나 군중이 제각기 이러쿵저러쿵 다른 소리로 떠들어 댔기 때문에, 천부장은 사실을 제대로 파악할 수 없었다. 그래서 천부장은 일단 바울을 병영으로 연행하라고 부하들에게 명령했다. 35 바울이 층계에 이르렀을 때는 군중이 더욱 난폭해져서 군인들은 바울을 메고 올라가야 했다. 36 군중은 계속 뒤따르면서 “그자를 없애 버려라!” 하고 소리를 질러 댔다.

37 ○ 병영 앞에 이르렀을 때, 바울이 천부장에게 말했다. “제가 한 말씀 드려도 되겠습니까?” 천부장은 놀라면서 “당신은 헬라 말을 할 줄 아오?” 하고는, 말을 이었다. 38 “그러면 당신이 바로 얼마 전에 폭동을 일으킨 뒤 자객 사천 명과 함께 광야로 도망친 그 이집트 사람이오?” 39 바울이 대답했다. “아닙니다. 저는 길리기아 지방의 다소에서 태어난 유대인으로, 그 유명한 도시의 시민입니다. 저 사람들에게 제가 잠시 한마디 할 수 있도록 허락해 주십시오.” 40 “그렇게 하시오.” 천부장이 허락하자, 바울은 층계 위에 서서 군중에게 조용히 해 달라고 손짓을 했다. 무리가 잠잠해지자, 바울은 히브리 말로 연설하였다. 27 The seven days were almost ended when some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul in the Temple and roused a mob against him. They grabbed him, 28 yelling, “Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who preaches against our people everywhere and tells everybody to disobey the Jewish laws. He speaks against the Temple—and even defiles this holy place by bringing in Gentiles.[d]” 29 (For earlier that day they had seen him in the city with Trophimus, a Gentile from Ephesus,[e] and they assumed Paul had taken him into the Temple.) 30 The whole city was rocked by these accusations, and a great riot followed. Paul was grabbed and dragged out of the Temple, and immediately the gates were closed behind him. 31 As they were trying to kill him, word reached the commander of the Roman regiment that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32 He immediately called out his soldiers and officers[f] and ran down among the crowd. When the mob saw the commander and the troops coming, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Then the commander arrested him and ordered him bound with two chains. He asked the crowd who he was and what he had done. 34 Some shouted one thing and some another. Since he couldn’t find out the truth in all the uproar and confusion, he ordered that Paul be taken to the fortress. 35 As Paul reached the stairs, the mob grew so violent the soldiers had to lift him to their shoulders to protect him. 36 And the crowd followed behind, shouting, “Kill him, kill him!” 37 As Paul was about to be taken inside, he said to the commander, “May I have a word with you?” “Do you know Greek?” the commander asked, surprised. 38 “Aren’t you the Egyptian who led a rebellion some time ago and took 4,000 members of the Assassins out into the desert?” 39 “No,” Paul replied, “I am a Jew and a citizen of Tarsus in Cilicia, which is an important city. Please, let me talk to these people.” 40 The commander agreed, so Paul stood on the stairs and motioned to the people to be quiet. Soon a deep silence enveloped the crowd, and he addressed them in their own language, Aramaic.(New Living Translation)

21:15 ○ 이런 일이 있은 후, 우리는 짐을 꾸려서 예루살렘으로 올라갔다. 16 우리와 동행한 가이사랴 성읍의 제자들 몇 사람이 우리가 묵기로 되어 있는 나손의 집으로 우리를 안내해 주었다. 나손은 키프로스 섬 출신으로, 일찍부터 제자가 된 사람이었다. 17 ○ 우리가 예루살렘에 도착하자, 그곳 형제들이 우리를 따뜻하게 맞아 주었다.18 다음날, 바울은 우리를 데리고 주의 동생 야고보를 만나러 갔다. 그 자리에는 예루살렘 교회의 장로들이 모두 모여 있었다. 19 서로 문안인사가 끝나자, 바울은 자신의 전도 여행을 통하여 하나님께서 이방 사람들에게 이루신 크고 놀라운 많은 일들을 자세히 보고했다. 20 이 말을 듣고서, 그들은 하나님을 찬양하며 바울에게 말했다. “사랑하는 형제여, 당신도 아시다시피 수만 명의 유대인들이 믿게 되었는데, 그들 모두가 율법을 지키는 데에 열성적인 사람들입니다. 21 그런데 그들이 당신을 두고 하는 말을 우리가 듣기로는, 당신은 이방 사람들 가운데 섞여 살고 있는 유대인들에게 아이들에게 할례를 주지 말 것이며, 우리 유대 사람의 관습도 따를 필요가 없다고 가르친다 합니다. 22 그러니 우리가 어떻게 하면 좋겠습니까? 그들 유대인 형제들은 당신이 여기 왔다는 것도 틀림없이 알게 될 것입니다. 23 그러므로 당신은 우리가 말하는 대로 따르도록 하십시오. 우리 가운데 하나님께 서원한 네 사람이 있습니다. 24 그들을 데리고 성전에 함께 올라가서, 그들로 하여금 정결 의식을 행하여 머리를 깎게 한 뒤, 그 비용을 치러 주십시오. 그렇게 하면, 당신에 관한 소문이 사실이 아님을 모두가 분명히 알게 될 것입니다. 또한 당신이 율법을 지키면서 살아가고 있다는 것을 아무도 의심하지 않을 것입니다. 25 이방인으로서 믿게 된 사람들에 대해서, 우리는 우상에게 바쳐진 음식과 피와 목매어 죽인 짐승의 고기를 먹지 말아야 하며, 또 음행을 삼가야 한다는 것을 이미 편지로 써 보냈습니다.” 26 그래서 바울은 다음날 네 사람을 데리고 가서 함께 정결 의식을 치른 뒤, 성전으로 올라갔다. 그리고 정결 의식이 끝나는 날짜와 그들 각자가 예물을 바치게 될 날짜를 성전 측에 알렸다.(쉬운말 성경)

 

15 After this we packed our things and left for Jerusalem. 16 Some believers from Caesarea accompanied us, and they took us to the home of Mnason, a man originally from Cyprus and one of the early believers. 17 When we arrived, the brothers and sisters in Jerusalem welcomed us warmly.18 The next day Paul went with us to meet with James, and all the elders of the Jerusalem church were present. 19 After greeting them, Paul gave a detailed account of the things God had accomplished among the Gentiles through his ministry.20 After hearing this, they praised God. And then they said, “You know, dear brother, how many thousands of Jews have also believed, and they all follow the law of Moses very seriously. 21 But the Jewish believers here in Jerusalem have been told that you are teaching all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn their backs on the laws of Moses. They’ve heard that you teach them not to circumcise their children or follow other Jewish customs. 22 What should we do? They will certainly hear that you have come.23 “Here’s what we want you to do. We have four men here who have completed their vow. 24 Go with them to the Temple and join them in the purification ceremony, paying for them to have their heads ritually shaved. Then everyone will know that the rumors are all false and that you yourself observe the Jewish laws.25 “As for the Gentile believers, they should do what we already told them in a letter: They should abstain from eating food offered to idols, from consuming blood or the meat of strangled animals, and from sexual immorality.”26 So Paul went to the Temple the next day with the other men. They had already started the purification ritual, so he publicly announced the date when their vows would end and sacrifices would be offered for each of them.(NEW LIVING TRANSLATION)

1After saying farewell to the Ephesian elders, we sailed straight to the island of Cos. The next day we reached Rhodes and then went to Patara. 2 There we boarded a ship sailing for Phoenicia. 3 We sighted the island of Cyprus, passed it on our left, and landed at the harbor of Tyre, in Syria, where the ship was to unload its cargo.4 We went ashore, found the local believers,[a] and stayed with them a week. These believers prophesied through the Holy Spirit that Paul should not go on to Jerusalem. 5 When we returned to the ship at the end of the week, the entire congregation, including women[b] and children, left the city and came down to the shore with us. There we knelt, prayed, 6 and said our farewells. Then we went aboard, and they returned home.7 The next stop after leaving Tyre was Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters[c] and stayed for one day. 8 The next day we went on to Caesarea and stayed at the home of Philip the Evangelist, one of the seven men who had been chosen to distribute food. 9 He had four unmarried daughters who had the gift of prophecy.10 Several days later a man named Agabus, who also had the gift of prophecy, arrived from Judea. 11 He came over, took Paul’s belt, and bound his own feet and hands with it. Then he said, “The Holy Spirit declares, ‘So shall the owner of this belt be bound by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and turned over to the Gentiles.’” 12 When we heard this, we and the local believers all begged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem.13 But he said, “Why all this weeping? You are breaking my heart! I am ready not only to be jailed at Jerusalem but even to die for the sake of the Lord Jesus.” 14 When it was clear that we couldn’t persuade him, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”(New Living Translation)
